A. Thomas Levin to Head NYSBA Program on Zoning and Land Use

A. Thomas Levin, the Chair of the Municipal Law, Land Use and Environmental Compliance Law practice at Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C. in Mineola, New York and the Immediate Past-President of the New York State Bar Association, will chair the New York State Bar Association’s continuing education program Nuts & Bolts of Zoning Law and Practice on Thursday, June 9, 2005 at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale. John Zollo, a member of the firm’s Municipal Law, Land Use & Environmental Compliance practice group, will present a lecture addressing the administration and enforcement of municipal land use laws and regulations. “For many years, enabling statutes have authorized a broad array of local governments to deal with the pressures of development. Municipalities have historically enacted zoning, subdivision regulation site plan approval and other traditional land use controls,” said Levin. “More recently, municipalities have begun to regulate in more non-traditional areas, such as historic preservation, architectural review, flood control and other areas which impact land use.” “Municipal officials and the attorneys who guide them are faced with the problem of enacting and administering these land use controls,” said Zollo. “When these regulations are violated municipal officials must devise strategies for enforcement.” “This program will provide a basic-level review of the typical methods of enactment, administration and enforcement of various land use regulations,” said Levin. “Included in this review will be a discussion of how to comply with the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR) in the enactment and administration of these controls.” The New York State Bar Association's Committee on Continuing Legal Education has been certified by the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board as an Accredited Provider of continuing legal education in the State of New York. Under New York's MCLE Rules, this program has been approved for credit for all attorneys, including those who are newly admitted (less than 24 months). This basic-level course may be used for New York MCLE credit consisting of 6.0 credits in areas of professional practice and 1.0 credit hour in ethics; for a total in either case of 7.0 credit hours.
