Meyer Suozzi Presents, "Navigating Paid Family Leave: Understanding New York's Newest Leave Program"

New York's Paid Family Leave Act (PFLA) will take effect on January 1, 2018, allowing employees paid leave to care for a seriously ill family member, bond with a new child and address issues related to a family member being called to active military duty. This informative and interactive seminar will explain the new law and the recently finalized regulations. The program will include concise course materials, hypothetical scenarios likely to occur when the law takes effect and a PowerPoint presentation to educate the business community on the impact and implementation of the Paid Family Leave Act.

Among the questions we will address:

• Which employers are required to participate in the Paid Family Leave Program?
• Which employers are allowed the OPTION of participating in the Paid Family Leave Program but are not compelled to participate?
• Which employees are eligible for paid leave?
• For what purposes can leave be taken?
• How much leave are employees entitled to take?
• Does an employee receive full pay during the leave period?
• How is the Paid Family Leave Act administered in conjunction with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)?

Presenters:

Lois Carter Schlissel is Chair of the firm's Employment Law practice and is an active member of the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Department. She counsels clients with respect to federal and state employment laws, compliance issues, and personnel matters and litigates claims arising under the Family Medical Leave Act, Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Deanne M. Braveman is an attorney and lobbyist in Meyer Suozzi's Government Relations practice, based in Albany, NY. On behalf of the firm's clients, she regularly handles budget requests and the legislative process including monitoring and drafting legislation, and working with state agencies during the implementation of regulations. She has extensive experience in all aspects of legislative campaigning. Ms. Braveman served as the chief lobbyist for the New York Paid Family Leave Campaign, working with stakeholders in the business community, coordinating with advocates and helping to educate legislators with regard to the legislation.
